How to Play Cards & Conversation

There is no wrong way to play. But if you want some structure or inspiration, here is everything you need to know.

What Is in the Box

  • 54 playing cards (52 standard cards + 2 Jokers), each with 5 unique conversation starters on the back
  • 1 special 55th card with three play options: Tell Me More (dig deeper), Pass (skip), or Change Topic (draw a new card)
  • Sturdy tuck box for storage and travel
  • Pocket-sized: 2.6 x 3.6 inches

The deck is a full poker deck with standard suits and values. You can play any traditional card game with it. The conversation starters are printed on the back of each card, so the two functions do not interfere with each other.

The Basics

Draw a card. Look at the five questions on the back. Pick the one that fits the group and the moment. Read it aloud. Everyone responds. That is it.

There is no scoring, no timer, no turns (unless you want them), and no winning or losing. The deck is a conversation tool, not a competition. Use as many or as few cards as you want. Some nights, one card is all you need. Other nights, you go through a dozen.

Ways to Play

1. Just Talk

The simplest way. Sit with anyone. Draw a card. Pick a question. Let the conversation go wherever it goes. Works with two people or twenty.

2. Best Answer Wins

Everyone answers the same question. The group votes on the most interesting, funniest, or most surprising response. The winner keeps the card. Most cards at the end wins.

3. Card Game Hybrid

Play poker, rummy, Go Fish, or any standard card game with the deck. After each hand, the winner flips their winning card over and picks a question for everyone to answer.

4. Speed Round

Fifteen words or thirty seconds max per answer. Fast responses, quick laughs. Great for icebreakers, large groups, and parties.

5. How Well Do You Know Me?

One person draws a card and reads a question. Everyone else answers as they think that person would answer. Then the person reveals their real answer. Works especially well with couples and close families.

6. House Rules

"Answer without using the letter S." "Only reference things from last month." "Respond in exactly five words." Adding constraints creates fresh laughter every time.

7. Deep Dive

Found a question that resonates? Skip the game format entirely. Just have a real conversation about it. Some of the best evenings start with a single powerful question.

8. Family Mode

Each person picks the question from the card that fits their age and comfort level. For the youngest children, remove the Joker cards. Ages 5 to 95.

9. Timer or Toast

Set a five-minute timer for a deep discussion round, or pair questions with drinks for a party format.

10. The 55th Card

Draw the special wild card at any point. "Tell Me More" lets someone expand on their answer. "Pass" lets someone skip without pressure. "Change Topic" starts fresh with a new card.

11. Solo Reflection

Use the questions for journaling, self-reflection, writing prompts, or content creation. No group needed.

Tips for First-Time Users

  • Start with lighter questions if the group does not know each other well
  • Let each person pick their own question from the card rather than forcing everyone to answer the same one
  • If someone draws a question they are not comfortable with, the 55th card gives them an easy out
  • There is no required number of cards per session. One great question can fuel an entire evening
  • The best conversations often happen after the formal game is over
  • Try it at different times: morning coffee, dinner, road trips, waiting rooms, holiday tables
